Our Community Profile
Wemindji, from wiimin uchii meaning “red ochre mountain” in Cree. Wemindji, formerly known as Old Factory, is a little island 25 kilometers north from the current location. Wemindji has been relocated since 1958 and now sits at the mouth of the Maquatua River on the east coast of James Bay, in northern Quebec, Canada. The nearest major city is Montreal which is approximately 1400 kilometers south of Wemindji.
